Another story from a car ride:
Katherine said "What the BEEP!"
I quickly asked where she heard that and she replies "on American Idol, they make a beep sound when someone says a bad word, and put the idol sign over their mouth!"
"Well, saying 'beep' is just as bad as saying the bad word, so let's not say it at all, ok?"
"But 'Heck' isn't really a bad word is it?"
"Let's just use nice words, ok?"

A few minutes later, Abby says softly, giggling, "Stupid...BEEP! Stupid...BEEP!"

Her big sisters wasted no time teasing her,"No Abby, you say the beep INSTEAD of the bad word, not WITH the bad word!"

"If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it"

That's the song that was on the radio as we piled into the car to drive home from Church tonight.
(We brought Chris some dinner since he didn't have time to come home between school and church.)
I barely registered the song, as I was waiting for all the buckles to click, and traffic to clear, and taking a few deep breaths after an hour of crazy excited girls running around church, playing with the water in the font, etc.

But then Katherine asked, "What does that even mean, why is she singing about a ring, and what is she putting a ring on?"

Hmmm, deep thoughts. (We spend a fair amount of time driving to and from Church, and it always seems that we end up having interesting discussions during the drive.)  I thought a half a second before I offered something along the lines of: When you decide you want to be married, you give a ring to show that you want to love that person forever. The lady singing the song is sad because the person she loved didn't love her as much; she didn't get a ring.

Now, I know that's not exactly it, but I thought it worked for my purposes.
Until Katherine continued....

"How do you know you want to get married?"

"Well, when you love someone so much, and you know that you want to spend the rest of your life with that person, you decide you want to get married."

K:"Can girls marry other girls? Because I want to marry ____ (a girl in her class)"

Deep Breath.

"Actually,  in some states, girls can marry girls, and boys can marry boys, but not everywhere."

Maggie:"That's not fair!"

"You're right! And actually, you know how we've talked about the Supreme Court, where they talk about if laws are fair or unfair? They're talking about that idea this week. And trying to decide how to make things fair."

(Note, to the best of my knowledge, the girls had no prior knowledge of the timeliness of this topic this week)

K:"I hope that girls can marry girls when I'm big."

"I hope you can marry whoever you want to marry. Whether that person is purple or blue or polka dotted, a boy or a girl, with 3 arms or 1 leg, 4 eyes or 2 noses. I hope that you will find someone that you love so much, and someone who loves you so much. I hope that you will always be happy"

(deep sigh, hoping our deep thoughts session was over for the night)

Maggie:"But, if you get married because you love someone so much, why do you get divorced?"

(insert discussion of friends with divorced parents)
(insert my searching my brain for an answer)

"I'm not sure, I think people probably have all different reasons. But sometimes for whatever reason, after they talk about it a lot, and think about it and pray about it, and spend a lot of time deciding, some people decide it's better to get a divorce.  But they still love each other, and they always love their kids."

(more discussion of who has divorced parents, who lives with which parents, etc)

Maggie: Do you get a different ring if you get divorced? Or do you just say 'I'm divorced' and you just are?

"No, you have to go to court, and tell the judge that you want to be divorced, just like when you get married you go to a judge or a priest in the church and tell them you want to get married.  I guess it's kind of like a reverse of getting married."

K:"But you PROMISE to stay married when you get married!"

"Well, lots of things happen, Katherine, lots of things."
(quiet for a few minutes)

Maggie:"Wow, how'd we end up talking about all of this, anyway?"

K:"It was that song about the ring!"

Ah yes, that song about the ring. Thank you Beyonce for prompting our deep thoughts tonight.

Continuing the fashion theme, check out Abby's pants. I meant to blog about these last week when she first wore them. She was hesitant, since they are 'dark blue like boys' pants. But I showed her the 'flowers' on the legs and she started to change her mind. The drawstring at the waist sealed the deal. Who knew a drawstring was so cool?

The story of these pants goes back at least to Iowa and perhaps to Arizona? These are pants from her cousins. She makes them her own style by adding pink on top and mismatched socks.

Once upon a time in our family, there a certain amount of teasing regarding the wearing of uniforms and a particular passion for the colors Navy and Tan.

You'll understand then why I had to laugh at myself as I looked at the outfit I chose for Abby today.

I give you the modern Navy/Tan. Inter-generational fashion trends!

A few gems for the memory file.
A bag of goldfish crackers? Blog worthy? Perhaps not. But it's what you'll find hidden within the bag of crackers that made me laugh out loud. Maggie packed her snack for school, and tried to hide a Dove candy under the goldfish. She was quite disappointed when I caught her.  "But how did you know?"
Moms know EVERYTHING of course!

Fancy Nancy and the Grinch. Who'd have thought that a simple "Dress like your favorite character" day at school could cause so much drama?    Leave it to my girls.  Katherine was just indecisive, Pinkalicious, Junie B, Katie Kazoo, Fancy Nancy?  She went with Nancy because of the $1 aisle Target hat that we found and the idea of carrying a purse full of accessories.  Maggie was convinced that Roald Dahl's the BFG was her best choice. And I agreed - given that his descriptions are so detailed. However, Maggie was horrified that we'd have to improvise on some of the details of his outfit. He carries a brown suitcase with glass jars. I offered her a black purse with some plastic tupperware - NOT ACCEPTABLE!   A Men's suit vest? How about a sweater vest? NO WAY! A large piece of felt for a cape? FORGET IT!  Then she had a fit about what else she could be.  Finally I suggested this repurposed bookworm costume with a Christmas Hat, and life was good again.  Sigh, nothing is simple!

Speaking of drama, Katherine had a great line this afternoon. Of course it wasn't fair that I was asking the girls to put away laundry before Chris got home from school. Of course no one was working as hard as Katherine was. And Katherine was just in a heap of self pity that life wasn't fair. Somewhere along the way, Maggie was bothering Katherine and Katherine solved the problem by stepping on Maggie's feet, which caused Maggie to bump her back and have an injury.   Somehow in the discussion of what/how/why it had happened, Katherine started crying that everyone was being mean to her, and in the most dramatic way she could, she stomped her feet off to her bedroom screaming, "You're all being mean to me, every single one of you, and I'm going to remember this.....FOREVER!" Can't imagine where she gets her flair for the dramatic!

And how about Abby? Last night Abby was told that she was to stay in her bed until 0630. She saw it on her clock, we knew she could identify it, we knew she could do it.  As I got in the shower at 600 I did not hear her. Just as I was opening the door to my room to go downstairs, I her her little moan "Oh no!" and then crying.  I went into her bedroom where she had a book up on her windowsill trying to find enough light to read. I asked her what was wrong and she cried, pointing at the clock, "Wook! I missed da firty, I've been waiting for da firty and now I missed da firty!"
She had missed the 30 - it was 0636 and she thought since she had missed 0630 she wasn't allowed to wake up!

And my final random story. Abby got to bring home the story bag from school today. I was working in the kitchen as she took out the pieces. "Ooooh It's a PUZZLE with this book Mommy!" pause "but it only has LOWERcase letters, no UPPER case letters, grrrr"

A few minutes later I heard, "Aha! I made it work!"

I went to see what she was talking about and found her like this. "I spelled my name, ABBY, but I had to use the lowercase letters!"

She took the 'd' and used it as a 'b'  She then tried to spell as many words as she could using the puzzle letters. She has been figuring out many sight words and watching her brain explode with the fun of reading is just as fun as it was when her sisters figured it out!
